Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) is firing back at White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany after she took a swipe at the progressive star.
During a press conference on Monday, McEnany said the White House rejects the idea of defunding police departments. During her comments, McEnany called Ocasio-Cortez a āBiden adviser.ā
ā@PressSec wouldnāt be the first person to mistake a women of color for having a lower position or title than she does,ā Ocasio-Cortez shot back on Twitter. āBut Kayleigh ā in case you havenāt picked up a newspaper in two years, Iām a Congresswoman.ā
āThe @PressSec comment is steeped in a long, hurtful, & horrendous history of stripping women of color of titles and diminishing them to āthe help,ā she continued.
Finally, she said, āPerhaps she isnāt aware that what she did is mired in racist history. If that is the case, I look forward to her apology tomorrow.ā
As some Democrats, including Ocasio-Cortez, have amplified calls to cut funding to police departments and use the funds for other purposes, conservatives have forcefully rejected that idea.
āThe fact that you have sitting congresswomen wanting to defund the police ⦠it is extraordinary,ā McEnany said before she singled out Ocasio Cortez and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.)
She said, āNotably Rashida Tlaib, notably Biden advisor AOC, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortezā as she listed some Democrats who have supported the push to defund police departments.
McEnany responded to Ocasio-Cortez with a transcript of the press conference. She said, āRead the transcript, Congresswoman.ā
