Gov. Larry Hogan Says Trump’s Calls to ‘Liberate’ States Are ‘Unhelpful’

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) believes President Donald Trump is sending mixed messages to the American people.

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin mentioned protests have popped up in different states calling for the suspension of stay-at-home orders.

Trump called on people to “liberate” states with Democratic governors in a series of tweets, as IJR previously reported.

Hostin asked Hogan if he agrees with the sentiment, as some say, that Trump is inciting domestic rebellion and it could lead to violence.

“I think it’s unhelpful. I mean it doesn’t make any sense, the mixed messaging we’re getting out of the president,” Hogan said.

Hogan went on to explain Trump’s plan recommends states wait to reopen until they report 14 days of downward numbers.

He reiterated Trump encouraged Americans to go out and protest and liberate those different states through Twitter. Hogan then said Trump was violating his own federal policy.

The governor sympathized with Americans noting he also feels frustrated and understands they want to get back to work.

Hogan circled back to his original point voicing his frustration with Trump’s comments.

“I feel like protesting myself frankly,” Hogan said. “I think to encourage people to go against your own policy … I don’t think it’s helpful to the discussion.”

Trump has received backlash for his tweets.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) instructed Americans to not “take the bait” and claimed it was another way for Trump to distract from his coronavirus response efforts, as IJR reported.

NBC’s Chuck Todd also took the opportunity to press Vice President Mike Pence on the issue.

Todd asked Pence why Trump is contradicting himself on the matter.

“The president has made it clear he wants to reopen America. And we laid out guidelines for every state in the country to safely and responsibly reopen their economy at the time and manner of their choosing,” Pence said.
