Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel took a job at President Donald Trump by using his won words against him.
On Tuesday’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on ABC, Kimmel showed a clip of Trump speaking at an event with King Charles IIIand Queen Camilla at the White House.
The president was talking about his parents Mary Anne MacLeod and Fred Trump, who were married for 63 years. He turned to first lady Melania Trump, and said, “That’s a record we won’t be able to match, darling.”
“I’m sorry. It’s just not going to work out that way,” Trump said to his spouse of 21 years.
“Wait a minute. Did he just make a joke about his death? My god. He should be fired for that,” Kimmel said.
Watch:
Kimmel was criticized after he joked Thursday that Melania Trump had the “glow” of an “expectant widow.”
Kimmel’s joke came two days before an armed man opened fire at the Washington Hilton where the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was being held.
Trump, the first lady, administration officials, members of Congress and journalists were present at the annual dinner.
Kimmel later said the comment was about the couple’s age gap, not “a call to assassination.”
Cole Allen, 31, was charged Monday with attempting to assassinate the president and accused of other firearms violations.
On Monday, the president demanded Kimmel be “immediately fired” by Disney and ABC.
Earlier Monday, the first lady said that “people like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate” and ABC should “take a stand.”
Kimmel pointed out the irony, in his view, of Trump demanding he be ousted and then joking about his age a day later.
“Only Donald Trumpwould demand I be fired for making a joke about his old age and then a day later go out and make a joke about his own old age,” Kimmel said.
